There is sometimes some confusion about the differences between Veterinary Insurance and Vet Wellness Plans that some veterinarians offer.
Vet Wellness Plans are a bundle of specified services (vaccines, diagnostic tests) at specified times throughout the contract agreement (usually a year). The specified services cannot be used at other times during the year (such as when your pet gets sick). We have several wellness plans available on our Pricing Page. Click here to see our Mobile Vet Wellness Plans.
Pet Insurance (Veterinary Insurance) plans cover sick visits, accidents, trauma, emergencies, etc. Depending on the pet health insurance company, they may also cover wellness services (vaccines, titers, diagnostic tests, flea/tick/heartworm prevention, and even acupuncture and holistic treatments).
There are many pet Insurance plans on the market, but some are deceptive in that they have set amounts for each illness, vaccines, exam, etc. that are often way under the actual cost of these services (so you only end up getting partially reimbursed). Some pet health insurance companies do not cover congenital or genetic illnesses such as hip dysplasia.
I like the pet insurance company, Embrace Pet Insurance. I love the flexibility of their plans. They let you customize it to your budget and comfort level. If you are just using it for emergencies and illnesses, these plans are VERY affordable. If you need to build in wellness coverage, Embrace lets you do that as well. You can choose your deductible (there is NO deductible for the wellness coverage option!!!!), what the maximum amount of coverage for illness and wellness will be each year, whether or not you would like coverage for medications (YES, you do..it is only about $2 more per month, the annual cost of this benefit will pay for itself even if your pet only needs one very cheap medication in the next year). Embrace also gives you a 5% discount for having a spayed or neutered pet. They also offer rewards for having the wellness coverage (it's always better to catch things early for the pet and for the wallet). Embrace also covers genetic diseases such as hip dysplasia treatment, which most insurance companies will not cover.
If you are interested in one of my wellness packages, then you would just purchase the accident/illness insurance coverage from Embrace. Likewise, if you will be selecting an insurance plan that covers wellness and preventive care, you do not need one of my wellness packages.
Please note, that with the preventive/wellness coverage, you can use this benefit for vaccines, annual bloodwork, heartworm/flea/tick preventives, acupuncture, etc. It is like having a Health Savings Account (HSA) for your pet to help you budget with expenses.
Following parameters for example only (you will choose your own parameters)
-Annual coverage of illness/injuries up to $10,000
-Deductible for illness/injuries per year $1,000
-Percentage reimbursement after meeting deductible 90%
-With prescription medication coverage
-With $650 annual wellness budget (there is no deductible or percentage coverage for this, it is a straight benefit amount for the entire year)
Willow: 1 year old spayed female Golden Retriever $71.81/month
Note: If you are comfortable budgeting for wellness care out of pocket, without the wellness coverage, the above plan would be $22.39/month
Willow: 9 year old spayed female Golden Retriever $84.79/month
Note: If you are comfortable budgeting for wellness care out of pocket, without the wellness coverage, the above plan would be $35.37/month
Ginger: 1 year old spayed female cat $60.84/month
Note: If you are comfortable budgeting for wellness care out of pocket, without the wellness coverage, the above plan would be $11.42/month
Ginger: 9 year old spayed female cat $67.48/month
Note: If you are comfortable budgeting for wellness care out of pocket, without the wellness coverage, the above plan would be $18.06/month
Note: You can play around with the amounts online. You can select from annual coverage amounts of $5K, $8K, $10K, and $15K. You can choose the deductible amount of $250, $500, $750, or $1K. And you can choose whether you want the insurance plan to reimburse you 70%, 80%, or 90% of the total veterinary bills. Remember that the deductible and percentages of coverage do NOT apply to the wellness coverage option!!! Those benefits are available up to the maximum that you chose per year for preventive care. The wellness coverage can be used for grooming and training for your pet too. I would recommend if you are adding the wellness coverage option to get the full $650, as you will spend between $200-300 in NC per year just on heartworm, flea, and tick prevention. Note: Unless your pet is truly a pure breed (dog or cat), you will want to select from the appropriate hybrid (includes designer cross breeds) or mixed breed category as this will save you a few dollars each month.
